2006 Awards: Society and HIVMA Awards
Congratulations to the 2006 Society and HIVMA Award Recipients
IDSA, the IDSA Education and Research Foundation, and the HIV Medicine Association offer awards to individuals to honor outstanding achievements in the field of infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS. Award recipients are pioneers in the study of newly emerging diseases, inspiring and supportive teachers, those who paved the way for life-saving vaccines, and those who have made significant contributions to HIV knowledge and the provision of quality HIV care. The awards will be presented during ceremonies at the 44th Annual Meeting of IDSA in Toronto.
Alexander Fleming Award
The Alexander Fleming Award is granted in recognition of acareer that reflects major contributions to the acquisitionand dissemination of knowledge about infectious diseases.
Merle Sande, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Sande is professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a former chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah.
Oswald Avery Award
The Oswald Avery Award recognizes outstanding achievement in an area of infectious diseases by an individual member or fellow of IDSA who is 45 or younger.
Cynthia Whitney, MD
Dr. Whitney is acting chief of the Respiratory Diseases Branch of the Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases at the National Center for Infectious Diseases.
Clinical Teacher Award
The Clinical Teacher Award honors a career involved in teaching clinical infectious diseases to fellows, residents, or medical students and recognizes excellence as a clinician and motivation to teach the next generation.
Hillar Vellend, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Vellend is professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Mentor Award
The Mentor Award was created to recognize individuals who have served as exemplary mentors and is presented to an IDSA member or fellow who has been exceptional in guiding the professional growth of infectious diseases professionals.
Kathryn Edwards, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Edwards is currently professor of pediatrics and vice chair for clinical research at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville.
Society Citation
The Society Citation is a discretionary award given in recognition of exemplary contribution to IDSA, an outstanding discovery in the field of infectious diseases, or a lifetime of outstanding achievement in a given area—either in research, clinical investigation, or clinical practice.
Larry Strausbaugh, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Strausbaugh is professor of medicine at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine as well as staff physician and hospital epidemiologist at the Portland Veteran Affairs Medical Center. He was executive director of IDSA’s Emerging Infections Network.
Watanakunakorn Clinician Award
Named to honor the memory of Dr. Chatrchai Watanakunakorn, this award is given annually by the IDSA Education and Research Foundation to an IDSA member or fellow in recognition of outstanding achievement in the clinical practice of infectious diseases.
Barbara H. Wade, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Wade is a private practitioner and hospital epidemiologist for Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, Fla.
HIVMA Awards
Emerging Leader in HIV Research Award
This award recognizes an HIVMA member who has made outstanding contributions to HIV medicine in clinical or basic research. Recipients must be actively engaged in HIV research, must be junior to mid-career in ranking,and must not have achieved the rank of professor or equivalent at their institution. This award is based on innovation and originality and requires demonstration of significant independent research and productivity.
Susan J. Little, MD
Dr. Little is associate professor of medicine in residence at the University of California, San Diego.
Emerging Leader in HIV Clinical Education Award
This award recognizes an HIVMA member who has demonstrated significant achievement in the area of HIV clinical care and provider education. Significant achievement is based on contributions to the acquisition and dissemination of information on HIV disease that transcend a single institution.
Joel E. Gallant, MD, MPH, FIDSA
Dr. Gallant is associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University as well as associate director of the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service and director of the Garey Lambert Research Center.
HIVMA Advocacy Award
This award recognizes an HIVMA member who has made important contributions to sound HIV/AIDS policy at the local, state, national, or international levels in the area of prevention, research, or access to care. This award is based on the level and nature of advocacy activities, and the importance of the effort to improving the lives of persons living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.
Timothy P. Flanigan, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Flanigan is professor of medicine and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brown University School of Medicine.
