Chinese Prime Minister Visits IDI
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) of Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda in late June. IDI is home to the AIDS Training Program, which trains African physicians and other health care professionals in HIV/AIDS care using IDSA and HIVMA members as faculty.
Jiabao met several persons living with HIV/ AIDS at IDI’s adult clinic. He observed lab technicians, nurses, and counselors as they attended to patients. According to IDI Director Keith McAdams, MD, the adult clinic has become an important place for people to gain confidence to tell their stories, where people are often referred to as “Friends” instead of “clients.”
Jiabao, who donated $100,000 and nine laptop computers to IDI, described the visit as an emotional experience. “I am really sad for the Friends for what they are going through. At the same time, I’m deeply touched by the care and support extended to them by IDI,” Jiabao said.
IDI, an independent institute owned by Makerere University, now cares for more than 8,000 persons living with HIV and has trained nearly 1,000 medical workers from 23 African countries on how to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS. The institute’s mission is to build capacity in Africa for the delivery of sustainable, high quality HIV/AIDS care and prevention through training and research.
