A 2 percent cut in Medicare physician payments will begin taking effect on April 1, unless Congress acts before then. The cuts, which would apply to payments for physician services delivered on or after April 1, are part of across-the-board cuts in funding that began in March for all federal agencies, known as sequestration.
IDSA and other physician organizations continue to urge Congress to stop the cuts and to fix the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) payment formula, used to calculate Medicare payments to physicians. Because of this broken formula, physicians continue to face periodic payment cuts, potentially limiting patient access to physician services.
