CDC Updates Guidance for Evaluating Patients with Novel Coronavirus Infection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided updated guidance earlier this month for evaluating patients with severe respiratory illness associated with a novel coronavirus.

The coronavirus was first reported to cause human infection in September 2012. As of March 27, 2013, 17 laboratory-confirmed cases had been reported to the World Health Organization: nine from Saudi Arabia, two from Qatar, two from Jordan, three from the United Kingdom, and one from the United Arab Emirates. Among the 17 cases, 11 were fatal.

CDC’s recommendations were outlined in a March 8 health advisory for health care providers and state health departments. Additional details and updates can be found on CDC’s coronavirus website.
